The Zambezi University (Unizambeze), a new public higher education institution, is to begin teaching as from February next year, converting part of the Matucauane military barracks in the central Mozambican city of Beira into lecture theatres.

An agreement to that end was signed between the Defence and Education Ministers, Filipe Nyussi and Aires Aly, in Maputo on Tuesday. The arrangement is part of a cooperation programme between the two institutions aiming at expanding training opportunities.

Speaking on the occasion, Aly stressed that the shortage of resources has previously made cooperation impossible, but expressed satisfaction at the fact that "all defence forces in the country have been directly involved in training activities and upgrading of human resources".

In that context, Aly committed his institution to provide Unizambeze with all the necessary and possible technical, material and human resources, in order to meet the targets of this new institution.

For his part, Nyussi explained that his ministry "is not deactivating any barracks, but acting in partnership with other sectors in order to use the military infrastructures in the best way".

Besides infrastructures, the Defence Ministry is to support Unizambeze by providing some of its own staff for lecturing. Under this agreement, Unizambeze is to support the training of national defence staff, both in long and short term courses.

Some other educational institutions are also functioning in military premises, such as the Niassa Public Administration Institution, a technical school in Marrupa, and the Cuamba Agriculture Faculty, all in the northernmost province of Niassa.

Bhangy Cassy, the chairperson of the Unizambeze Installation Commission, told AIM that in order to start classes in February next year, the project to rehabilitate the future premises of his institution is already underway.

Unizambeze is to offer courses in areas such as Human and Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Agriculture, Information Technologies and Engineering. The institution will make available about 800 places, some of which will be specifically reserved for military personnel.

"The enrolment mechanisms will be the same as in other higher education institutions, through admission examinations", said Casey. "However, there will be mechanisms, still to be established, to facilitate the admission of young demobilized soldiers, interested in furthering their academic training".
