Kigali — A faith-based non-government organisation, Glory to Glory, has pledged war against illicit drugs in the country.
Olivier Iryivuze, an official in charge of development, said that the NGO which will be based in Kicukiro, intends to begin public awareness on the dangers of illicit drugs but will mainly target consumers or victims.
"Illicit drugs are a problem facing many countries in the world; that is why after successfully completing a survey on consumption of illicit drugs we made it a priority," he said.
Iryivuze mentioned cocaine, marijuana, opium, mugo (heroin), and kanyanga (a locally brewed liquor) as the most abused substances in Rwanda.
A former drug dealer for eight years, Iryivuze revealed that many illicit drugs are consumed through sniffing, drinking, smoking and spraying all over the body which is dangerous to human health.
Iryivuze pointed out that apart from being a security threat, illicit drugs were also among the factors that lead to high rates of HIV/AIDS infection. He said the NGO would carry out training for women in Kicukiro District in the fight against prostitution.
