The Delta state government will provide temporary dump sites to reduce indiscriminate dumping of waste in its major cities.

The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Lawrence Osiegbu, stated this at the weekend in Asaba while monitoring the monthly sanitation exercise in the state.

He said that the sites will serve as transfer stations and loading points before the final evacuation to the permanent sites located outside the cities.

He criticised the indiscriminate dumping of waste on major roads in the city, stressing that "such attitude is filthy and unhealthy."

Osiegbu said that the ministry, in collaboration with local government councils, was sensitising the public on the need to patronise the Private Sector Participants (PSP) in refuse collection.

Meanwhile, a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who monitored the sanitation exercise in Asaba and Ogwashi-Uku, reports that many residents stayed indoors during the sanitation.

However, 30 persons were arrested and arraigned before a mobile court for violating the Environmental Sanitation Law and Regulations.

Chief Magistrate Helen Okonkwo-Ikeh, sentenced 28 of the offenders to imprisonment ranging from two weeks to two months, while two persons were cautioned and discharged.

Those convicted were, however, given options of fine ranging from N500 to N5,000.
