Many private schools in Kano State were yesterday picketed by officials of the Nigeria Labour Congress in compliance with the ongoing nationwide strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers.

Speaking to Daily Trust yesterday, the NLC state secretary, Malam Aminu Sulaiman stated that NLC had forced about 50 percent of private schools in the state to comply with the NUT nationwide strike.

"We cannot force the children of the poor to go back and allow the children of those that cause the strike to remain in their classrooms.

This, to us is injustice and unfair treatment. Since the children of the poor have been sent back home, the children of the leaders, who dominate the private schools must also go back home," said the NLC secretary. Malam Aminu Sulaiman debunked allegations that some members of the NLC had beaten up some private school proprietors while picketing the schools. He noted; "We did not send anybody to cause chaos, but our members have only been sent to shut down any private school that refuses to comply with the ongoing NUT strike".

When Daily Trust went round some private schools within the state metropolis, it was observed that while some schools were shut, others were forced by the NLC officials to close for the day.

Speaking to Daily Trust, proprietor of Bennie International School , Mrs Bennie I. Ihena said that some people suspected to be members of the NLC besieged her school and forcefully sent all the children they found in the school back home.

She said the people numbering about 200 climbed into the school premises before finally breaking the main gate of the school after which they chased away all the children.
