Nigeria: Akeredolu is New NBA President

Mr. Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu (SAN) yesterday emerged as the new President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

He was returned unopposed as the next leader of the association.

He will take over from the incumbent President, Mr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) on August 29 when the bar election is scheduled to hold.

He will hold office for two years.

Ever since the Nigerian Bar Association, which went comatose in 1996 following an inconclusive poll for its presidency was resusciated by a committee headed by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, this is the first time the bar leader would emerge unopposed.

The bar election for other keenly contested positions and the slots already filled will be held in Abuja on August 29.

Also returned unopposed are Mr. Gbolahan Gbadamosi as Assistant Publicity Secretary and Linda Rose Bala as Legal Adviser.

At the opening of the nomination envelopes for the candidates in Abuja on Tuesday, NBA Secretary-General, Chief Rafiu Lawal-Rabana urged lawyers to show good examples during the conduct of the election scheduled for this year's Annual General/Delegates' Conference in Abuja between August 23 to 29.

The opening of the nomination's envelope was held at the association's office and was witnessed by other candidates and senior lawyers.

But the office of the First Vice-President will be contested for by Ikeazor Akaraiwe and Blessing Ukiri while five candidates were cleared to run for the office of the Secretary-General.

They are: former Secretary Lagos branch, Dame Carol Ajie, Chidi Nworka of Owerri branch, former National Financial Secretary Ibrahim Mark, Tony Oka of Abakaliki, former Chairman Port-Harcourt branch Okey Owhonda.

The candidature of Mr. G.C Igbokwe was to be determined further by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of NBA.

Ike Uko of Lagos and Tess Morris Okeke of Port-Harcourt branch will slug it out for the office of the Treasurer, while Ganiyu Ajape of Kano Branch may face Franklin Awuse for Welfare Secretary as his (Awuse)'s candidature will be further scrutinised. Muritala Rasheed of Kaduna branch,Dennis Agbaga from Warri and Rommy Mum are for the office the Publicity Secretary.To contest for the post of Financial Secretary are Adetutu Siyanbola of Lagos branch and Enarhe Mark from Ogoja.
