Cross River
THE level of HIV infection amongst women in Cross River State and the entire country is increasing, says the First Lady of Cross River State, Mrs. Obioma Imoke.
She spoke in her capacity as chairperson, State Women Coalition On HIV/AIDS (SWOCA) on the occasion of the stakeholders meeting in Calabar.
Mrs. Imoke who said SWOCA was set up following directives from the wife of the President, Hajiya Turai Musa Yar,Adua for wives of state governors to come up with such outfits, noted "the level of HIV infection amongst women in our state and country is increasing and the disease burden is more on them."
Continuing, she said, "the number of women who are thrown out of marriages because they are HIV positive is increasing daily."
She said there were cultural practices that expose women to the virus and that such practices were "being carried out without thinking about how the woman feels, these amongst other preventable and avoidable practices which predisposes the women to the virus has been responsible for the increase in the number of women being infected with the dreaded virus-HIV."
The State First Lady explained that the coalition of women on HIV/AIDS was therefore providing an opportunity for positive and more targeted intervention addressing the HIV/AIDS and reproductive health needs of women from a more sustainable manner.

"The Coalition is to provide the enabling environment for a systematic approach to address issues relating to reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. This is why we need to have an effective partnership, collaboration and networking with stakeholders such as you, who are committed to the cause of the Coalition.," she added.
