Nigeria: Police Nab Kidnappers of Expatriates

The Police in Abuja yesterday paraded three groups of kidnappers arrested in Akwa Ibom State including the a five-man group that abducted threh Chinese expatriate staff of AKC Asphalt plant at Akamkpa, Mr. Zhang PengFre, Mr. Jiang and Mr. Wang and collected the sum of N18 million as ransom.

Parading the gang, Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro said that the suspects kidnapped the expatriate staff, demanded and received ransom amounting to N18m, saying they then engaged the services of a native doctor to help them escape.

"However acting on intelligence information, detectives from Akwa Ibom State command arrested them on 11th June, 2008," the IG said pointing out that, "exhibits including N375,000, some charms, a generator and a freezer were recovered from the suspects."

He said the other group made up of one Godswill Nkamiang alias 'Placid' and Uyo Nathaniel alias 'Alhaji', planned and kidnapped Mr. Sassive Khalil a Lebanese staff of Stemco Nig. Limited, Ikot Ikpene, on his way to work and demanded and received N5 million ransom from the Akwa Ibom State government.

"They were however arrested following a tip off by crack detectives from the state police command headquarters" Okiro said.

Also arrested was the third kidnap suspect, Mr. Dominic Etim who abducted a toddler, Master Praise Isimaya (4yrs), from the residence of Mr. And Mrs. Clifford Isimaya at No. 12B Akpan Essien Str.

"Luck however, ran against Kenneth Dominic Etim who was arrested by alert members of the public while trying to escape" the IG said noting that "In the course of investigation, he led policemen to were his co-travellers were arrested and baby Praise rescued and handed over to his parents."
