A. R. Harruna Attah

President Kufuor, bless him, can be described as a victim of his own success in upholding the freedom of speech/media and respect for human rights. I say this with all sincerity because only in a very few places in Africa, can we have the kind of unbridled freedoms that we are witnessing in Ghana.

When over the Republic Day holiday the (P)NDC leader took to the airwaves to pour scorn on President Kufuor personally and his administration generally, I received many angry calls. "Something must be done", some of them said.

"What should be done?" I wanted to know. I explained that in the kind of democracy we have been labouring to build these past 7 and a half years, there's not much that can be done - it is a free country. Just because an ex-Flt. Lt. is saying things we do not like, we cannot stop him merely on those grounds. So the ex-Flt. Lt. gets a number of radio stations to simultaneously broadcast his verbiage and he thinks he has achieved something.

But perhaps he has - an unintended effect: President Kufuor's human rights and democratic credentials score 100%. That is why the President has earned so much respect internationally, to the envy of the former junior airman. The more he rants and raves and Kufuor lets him be, the more Kufuor's stature grows and the junior airman's diminishes...
