Temperatures will drop significantly in Namibia over the next few days and are expected to fall below zero in the South this weekend due to a cold front moving up, according to the Weather Bureau in Windhoek.

Weatherman Simon Dirkse said yesterday the frontal system would be accompanied by a strong wind and will make a land-fall tonight.

"We also expect some showers," said Dirkse.

He said the cold front would cause temperatures to drop significantly by today and day temperatures were not expected to exceed 15 degrees Celsius tomorrow.

Dirkse said the minimum temperatures for tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday would fall below zero in the South.

The cold is due to reach the central areas tomorrow, but it will be felt here significantly on Saturday.

Dirkse said that the temperatures would recover by Monday.

"But we expect another cold front on Tuesday," he added.

Meanwhile forecasters in South Africa are warning residents in the Western and Northern Cape against very cold, wet and windy conditions tomorrow.

The South African Weather Bureau said there was a risk of flooding in the Cape Town area, with strong winds and rough seas with waves in excess of five metres.
