Nigeria: KWSG Warns Residents Against Indiscriminate Dumping of Refuse

The Kwara State Commissioner for Environment and Tourism, Alhaji Ahmed Makana, has warned residents of the state, especially the state capital, against indiscriminate dumping of refuse inside all the links to the Asa river to allow free flow of water.

The Commissioner who gave the warning in Ilorin during an unscheduled visit to some of the areas, was shocked by the heaps of refuse dumped on the river bank and expressed dissatisfaction over refuse dumping in the river by people living around the areas.

Makama said that the state government, in order to arrest the situation which he described as unfortunate, affirmed that sanitary officers from the Ministry will henceforth, keep vigil along all the riverside links as from 6.00am everyday to bring offenders to book.

Commenting on the level of the job to excavate debris in the river by Bilisarat Nigeria Limited, the Commissioner urged the contractors to procure necessary equipment needed for quick removal of all the debris along the river's waterway properly or risk sanctions.

The Commissioner who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. (Mrs.) Zainab Funmilayo Ambali, visited the project sites along Folawiyo, Amilegbe and Emir's roads in Ilorin.

Meanwhile, the State's Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, has urged civil servants in the state to always maintain a clean and healthy environment.

The State's Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, made the call during the weekly environmental sanitation exercise observed by staff of his Ministry.

The Commissioner who stressed that cleanliness was next to Godliness, pointed out that for mankind to live a healthy life, them surroundings ought to be clean and healthy at all times.

He therefore, called on the entire members of staff of his Ministry to make personal hygiene and clean surroundings their watchwords so as to prevent avoidable diseases.
