Uganda: Divorce Cases Worry Police

2 July 2008

Kampala — THE Police in Lira district have decried the increasing cases of divorce. Jodaga Gemonamola, the Police community liaison officer, attributed the problem to drinking, poverty and gambling among men.

He added that the majority of the cases of divorce had been perpetrated by women. Divorce, he noted, was one of the most traumatic periods in a person's life.

In an attempt to avert the situation, the sub-county authorities have increased the divorce fee from sh10,000 to sh50,000, but many women were meeting the charges to separate with their spouses, he added.

"Men start drinking from morning till midnight," Gemonamola said, adding that some men do not buy food in their homes.

Addressing journalists at Lira Police Station on Tuesday, he said they had instructed local leaders to set up a bylaw to punish people who drink during working hours.

Gemonamola also noted an increase in land disputes in the district. He said the majority of the cases were reported by internally displaced people who inherited land from their parents.

"Many people do not respect the decisions of local council leaders thus undermining the justice system."
