Uganda: Kabale SS Closed Over Strike

Darious Magara

2 July 2008

Kampala — Kabale Secondary School has been closed following a violent strike on Tuesday. A total of 10 students were seriously injured when the Police had running battles with them.

The deputy headmaster, Robert Katebarirwe, said they were rushed to Kabale Hospital in critical condition. Over 1,200 students smashed windows of the school vehicles, the administration block, classrooms and dinning hall, protesting what they called poor meals.

They pelted policemen with stones. The Police fired in the air to disperse them. Kabale is one of the densely populated schools implementing the Universal Secondary Education programme.

Due to limited classes, some students study only in the morning, a policy that angered parents, teachers and students. Parents complained that their children spend most of their time loitering in the town, video halls and bars.

The headmaster, Edwin Babimpa, could not be reached for comment. By press time, the Riot Police was deployed at the school.
