Nigeria: FG Sets Up C'ttee to Verify Judgment Debts

The Federal Government has set up a 7-member committee to verify judgment debts and legal fees which government owes.

The committee was inaugurated by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa (SAN) on behalf of President Umaru Yar'adua.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the AGF, Mr. Taye Akinyemi, the membership of the committee was drawn from the Ministry of Finance, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and that of the Auditor General, the Inspector General of Police, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA).

The Committee, presided over by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Alhaji Ahmed Yola, will among other things, sight the certified copies of the judgment in all cases; identify the parties to the actions; ascertain whether or not the actions were properly defended and where they were not defended, the possibility of setting aside the said judgments.
