3 July 2008

Kumasi — THE MEMBER of Parliament (MP) for Asawase, Mr. Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has described the National Accidents and Emergency Centre (A&E Centre), currently under construction at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, as a unique and useful project.

He said the A & E Centre is one of the best health facilities to be put in place by the government. The Asawase MP made the observation, when Mr. Godfred Otchere, MP for Ayesuano and Vice Chairman of the Parliamentary Sub-Committee on Health, led a four-man delegation to inspect the 74 million euro project site, at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, recently.

Other members of the Parliamentary Sub-Committee were Mrs. Elizabeth Agyeman, MP for Oforikrom, and Mr. Mahama Ayariga, MP for Bawku Central.

MP Mubarak, who is a ranking member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, however, insisted that a maintenance culture must be sustained, to prolong the lifespan of the project.

He also urged doctors and nurses, and other health professionals, to consciously make the project serve its purpose, and hoped that the project would be seen as a national asset, and linked it to all the 10 regions, or it could be rendered useless.

The MP congratulated the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the KATH, Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, for efforts at sustaining the progress of work.

Other projects inspected by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, during the visit, were the new 210-body mortuary of the Pathology Unit of the hospital, renovation of the Specialist Consultation Block, Maternity and Children's Block, and the supply of medical equipment for the hospital.

Mr. John Miladinic, Project Manager of Gartech, the construction firm of the A & E Centre, said the project was expected to be completed by August this year.

Dr. Nsiah-Asare said the construction of modern facilities at the hospital, was to promote quality healthcare delivery in the region, and the nation as a whole.
