Marracuene — The Portuguese government, through its cooperation agency, donated on Wednesday about 13,000 US dollars worth of computer equipment, books and medicines to the Mozambican Practical Police School at Matalane, in Maputo province.
During the hand over ceremony, the Counsellor at the Portuguese Cooperation Agency, Fernando Carvalho, told the general police commander, Custodio Pinto, that this gesture is part of the cooperation between the two countries that has helped train more than 1,300 Mozambican police officers since 2007.
The equipment includes two personal computers, two printers, an unspecified number of law books, and medicines, the latter to reinforce the stock of drugs in the local health post.
Carvalho said that 2008 marks a turn around in terms of the method of cooperation in his sector, that will, as from now, look at training of trainers in Portugal, who will later train their colleagues here in Mozambique.
"Based on this new cooperation model, the Interior Ministry has sent 32 police officers and fire fighters to Portugal, and expectations are to have trained 63 professionals by the end of the year", he said.
The idea is for the Interior Ministry to have its own trainers and open a space to broaden the cooperation in training for other areas, such as immigration and fire fighting.
Thanking the Portuguese agency for its donation, Pinto said that these materials represent a great contribution to the area of training, which he described as one of the pillars of development to improve the performance of the Mozambican police.
