Gina Ama Blay, publisher and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Western Publications Limited, publishers of the "Daily Guide", an Accra-based pro-government daily newspaper, allegedly received threats on her life on 2 July 2008 by a caller who identified himself only as "Gajekpo" and claimed to be a soldier in the Ghana Armed Forces.
According to a 3 July article in "The Statesman" newspaper, Blay received the threats verbally by telephone, followed later by three short text messages on her private cell phone.
The "Statesman" article said "Gajekpo" was upset about the "Daily Guide"'s 2 July banner headline and threatened the journalist. The headline, "JJ Goes Mad", had referred to a news conference by former Ghana president Jerry John Rawlings, in which Rawlings castigated the ruling government.
On the phone "Gajekpo" accused Blay of bias, threatening "you will see . . . we will deal with you."
Blay told MFWA's Ghana correspondent that her life is in danger.
She has complained to the Ghana Journalists' Association (GJA) and the security agencies. The Nima police have since commenced investigations into the matter.
