Kampala — JOHN Tumusiime's knock of 45 runs lifted Uganda from the jaws of defeat as Uganda beat Tanzania in their second game of the ICC U-17 regional cricket tournament at Lugogo yesterday.
At Kyambogo, Kenya beat Rwanda by eight wickets in the other game.
Uganda had looked destined for defeat after the opening batting pair of Emmanuel Nakaana (2) and Henry Ssenyondo (1) were trapped leg before.
The situation became worse when Emmanuel Taban (2) and Andrew Ochan (6) failed to make an impact on the scoreboard until Tumusiime took to the crease.
Batting with maturity, he lifted Uganda from 20 to 160 runs before he was dismissed. Saul Kisikwe put on 44 as Uganda set a target of 185.
Tanzania's Muhsiu Ramadhan had bowling figures of (3/45).
In reply, Tanzania's defence ended with the opening pair of Kelvin Nassibu (22) and Rushpa Singh (22), the only batsmen with double digit figures.
Uganda's bowlers Ahmed Sangau (3/11), Edward Magumba (3/10) and Nakaana (2/5) ripped through the Tanzanians as they collapsed at 74 all out.
Uganda will now meet Kenya today, with the winner lifting the trophy.
Theâ-à2007 league champions Africa Cricket Club will take on Wanderers at Lugogo in the sole first division encounter of the four matches slated to open the 2008 Castle Lager cricket championship this Sunday.
The rest, all second division contests, will see Patidar face Kutchimadu at Kyambogo, debutants Charity will face KICC in Entebbe, and JACC hosting Premier in Jinja.
