Uganda: Besigye Trial Witness Remanded

3 July 2008

Kampala — A STATE witness in Col. Kizza Besigye's treason case in 2006 has been charged with threatening violence and assault. Jennifer Aryemo was yesterday remanded in Luzira for allegedly threatening to shoot Winnie Okidi.

Dressed in a black and white flowered dress, head scarf and brown shades, Aryemo denied the charges before the Makindye Grade One Magistrate, Isa Sserukuma.

Prosecution lead by Marion Acio alleged that Aryemo committed the offence on January 15 at Seventh Street in Industrial Area, Kampala.

Her lawyer, Allan Okecha, asked the court to grant his client bail but his plea was in vain because one of the sureties, Joyce Lapot, was not substantial.

She was answering charges of theft before the same court.

"The state affidavit to respond to the application was not prepared in time and one of the sureties is not substantial because she has a case in our court," Acio stated.

The case was adjourned to July 8.
