Nairobi — Champions Waa High School begun their soccer title defence on a winning note when they hit title favourites Shimba Hills Secondary School 3-1 as the Kwale Distirct secondary schools games got under way at Waa Boys High School Thursday.
Waa, under the tutelage of former Coast Stars tactician Hassan Tito, started the game forcefully, nettng the match opener in the 12th minute through Mwachimo Mohammed after a brilliant one-two combination with Evans 'Crouch' Wandera for a 1-0 half time score.
Wandera netted the second a minute from resumption before Mwaka Dickson scored the third in the 38th minute.
The lone goal for Shimba Hills was scored by Khamisi Mwapaka in the 87th minute.
In another match at the same venue, Ngombeni defeated Mkongani 2-1.
In a girls' match, defending champions Waa Girls defeated Kwale 5-0.
Zena Hassan and Frimila Hassan scored a double each while Gerada Akinyi netted the fifth.
Earlier, hosts Shimba Hills had dominated the Shimba Hills zonal games, winning all the titles.
The school's soccer team under former Harambee Stars and Kenya under-21 coach Rishadi Shedu started the medal haul when they hammered Lukore 4-0. In matches played earlier, Shimba Hills girls team beat Kichaka Simba 1-0 and went ahead to beat Lukore 3-0.
Shimba Hills boys and girls volleyball teams beat both Kichaka Simba and Lukore an identical 3-0 to book their ticket to the district championships.
At the Waa zonal championships, Coast champions Waa overcame bitter rivals Kaya Tiwi 1-0 to retain the zonal soccer title.
They were later held to a barren draw by Ngombeni, who will be at the district championships as zonal representatives after they held Kaya Tiwi to yet another scoreless draw.
Elsewhere, Kilifi Township are the new Kilifi District secondary schools soccer champions after beating Dzitsoni 3-2 on penalties in the finals at Katana Ngala High School.
After a 1-1 full time score, Townships emerged victorious during the penalty shoot-out.
Lutsangani secondary beat Kilifi High 3-2 to win the girls' soccer title in another tough match.
