Ethiopia: Agency Awards Best Achievements in Science And Technology

The Ethiopian Science and Technology Agency (ESTA) on Tuesday awarded medals, money and accreditation certificate to individuals and institutions in the country, for their usage and teaching and dissemination of the science and technology.

Two teaching and research institutions- Bako Rural Technology Research Center and Mekele University received the award for their achievements in the trade.

The center is known for its technology multiplication and dissemination which benefited farmers to increase their income and thereby improved livelihood.

More than 1000 pre and post harvest technologies, 1700 small farm implements and 2100 different energy saving devices had been manufactured and disseminated to the rural community.

And Mekele University is said to make a commendable efforts in forging strong partnership programmes and networking with international universities, research institutions and organizations which the agency said conforms to institutional values and cultures of the university in promoting science and technology.

Further, three post graduate students, two improving innovation, two primary and secondary science teachers, two in science and technology popularization, three higher education teaching and research received from 3500- 20,000 Birr for each and two institutions medal for their relentless effort in their research, teaching and promoting, respectively of the field of science and technology.

The Ethiopia Science and Technology has been carrying out various activities for the advancement of Science and Technology in the country, among the least users of science and technology.

The agency, in 2002, began the initiative to recognize and award, breakthroughs and achievements in various fields of science and technology aimed at encouraging research and advancement in the field.

Plans to award in eight fields failed did not materialize as new innovation and science and technology writers were not found this year, ESTA Director General Dr. Zerihun Kebede said in his speech at the ceremony at the Sheraton the award hand over by FDRE President Girma W. Giorgis.

President Girma on the occasion noted that even though the country is known for its ancient civilization, it could not find solution to recurrent famine and droughts which kill millions every time the come.

He blamed the backwardness in science and technology in the country for low level of The back ward ness in science and technology delay its development.

The government intensifies its efforts in supporting science and technology.
