AUTHORITIES of Anambra State University, Uli have sent a save- our- soul (S.O.S) to the state government to do something about power supply and monthly subvention to the institution, saying that the university would crash if help did not come urgently.

Vice chancellor of the university, Professor Iheanacho Orajaka who spoke when members of the state House of Assembly committee on education visited the institution, said although the state has been trying to provide some of the needs of the university, there are still more to be done.

"Our financial base is nothing to write home about. Our internally generated revenue is mainly the school fees and all together, we charge N25,000 which is too small compared with what is paid in other institutions. So, we barely manage.

There are a lot of things we can do, but we cannot do them due to financial constraints.

"But the greatest problem here is power supply. Most of the time, we are on generators which is a way but not a solution to our problem because we spend an average of 200,000 to maintain our two generators on a weekly basis.

We have invited a company that provides solar energy and its officials say they can supply us 50kva capacity and solar panel that can supply light to half of the university.

"If we can the solar energy, at least we would light up the campus at night so that the students would no longer suffer the problem of working in darkness at night."

According to the vice chancellor, the continued patience of the students should not be taken for granted, adding that if they react over lack of power, the resultant effect might not be good for anybody.

He commended the House for improving on the budget allocation to the university, saying however that after the approval of the estimates, what remains is actualizing the budget, especially with half of the financial year gone.
