PRESIDENT Umaru Musa Yar'Adua yesterday declared open a two-day retreat for the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples' Democratic Party (NCW)and hailed the Party's NWC as its engine room.
In a speech read on behalf of the President by the Minister of Information and Communication, Mr. John Odey in Tinapa, Cross River State - the venue of the retreat - Yar'Adua observed that the growth of the PDP could be traceable to the activities of its NWC.
"The National Working Committee (NWC)," said the President, "no doubt, remains a veritable and crucial organ of our Party, which is charged with the day to day running of the Party," he said.
The President maintained that the NWC of the PDP, led by the National Chairman, Prince Vincent Eze Ogbulafor acts on behalf of National Executive Committee (NEC) and shoulders the responsibility of ensuring the healthy growth and development of the Party.
"Most of the time, the National Executive Committee and even the National Convention base their decisions on information processed by NWC and have to implement such decisions when taken," he said.
He expressed his joy by noting the retreat has been designed by his Party to formally present, define, explain the character, vision, mission and principles of "reformed" PDP to the Party leadership.
"Similarly, it is joyous to note and appreciate the collaborative endeavour of the leaders of the PDP in the discourse, and internalization of the 7-Point Agenda of this administration, with a view to improving the living standard of our people," he said.
According to him, the PDP's Irreducible Minimum Objectives (IMO) and the fundamental issue of enhancing internal Democracy, Rule of Law and capacity building are well thought-out initiatives which must be taken seriously in the present political dispensation by all members
irrespective of position.
"We as the ruling Party must emphasize the imperative of internal democracy and the reform process of electioneering in this country," he said
The President said he had no iota of doubt in his mind that the Party organs will be
developed with capacity to sensitize, educate and promote ideals of good democratic tenets that is the vision the PDP.
"We must therefore not relent in cross fertilizing ideas needed to effectively re-position the party for challenges ahead," he said through Mr. Odey , and declared the retreat open.
