Sokoto — International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), has trained no fewer than 13,000 youths on various vocational skills in the last two years in Sokoto with a view to making them self-reliant and useful to the society.
The Agency had also assisted over 30,000 disabled persons in the state so as to discourage them from street begging.
The state Cordinator of the programme, Alhaji Aminu Dogon Daji made the disclosure yesterday, in a chat with LEADERSHIP in his office in Sokoto.
According to him, "IFAD embarked on these poverty alleviation programmes in order to improve the living standard of the people especially rural dwellers.
He disclosed that IFAD is currently carrying out community development projects in seven local government areas of the state, pointing out that local government councils that require its technical assistance should forward its proposal for appraisal.
Dogon Daji also, called on farmers in the areas to form associations in order to benefit from the agencies programmes.
The Programme Officer further explained that, the Agency has constructed over 27 km feeder roads across the state, adding that an awareness campaign was recently initiated with the view to sensitising the public on the dangers of HIV/AIDS.
On its agricultural programmes, Dogon-Daji revealed that fertilizer and farm implements have been provided to farmers with the view to boosting farming activities in the state.
