Nigeria: Damola Beats International Record to Win N1 Million Jackpot

Osayemi Damola has won N1 million Jackpot bonus for her splendid performance in the 100 metres women race, with a time of 11.08 seconds to beat the International Amateur Athletics Federation record of 11.09 seconds during the NNPC/ExxonMobil Track and Field Championship which ended in Abuja yesterday.

The new Queen of the track also won a gold medal in the 200 metres women final with a time of 22.77 seconds, while Gloria Kemasode went home with the silver with a time of 23.24 seconds and Helen Emedolu, the wife of old track horse, Uchena Emedolu posting a time of 23.57 seconds to win the bronze medal.

In the 200 metres men final, the new 100 metres champion, Obinna Metu won the gold medal with a time of 20.55 seconds.

Musa Deji went home with the silver, while Olamide Oduwole won the bronze with both running a time of 20.81 and 21.22 seconds.

In the 800 metres men final, Lucky Iyoha of Edo State won the gold medal with a time of 1:49.09 second to beat Ibrahim Ahmed and Lawrence Oseku to the 2nd and 3rd place with a time of 1:49.36 and 1:51.31 seconds, respectively.

Funke Fadare won gold in the 800m women final while Tobi Kike and Bummi Odejobi won the silver and bronze.

In the 400m men, Godday James won the gold medal with a time of 45:36 seconds while Saul Weigopwa and Bola Lawal posted a time of 45:80 and 46:27 seconds. Sade Abagan came first in the 400m women final with a time of 51.00 and Joy Eze won the silver medal with a time of 51.41 while Ajoke Odumosu returned with a time of 51.50 seconds.

In the 100m Hurdles women, Toyin Augustus won the gold when she finished the race with a time of 13.10 seconds while Jessica Ohanaja and Joy Digha won silver and bronze with a time of 13.37 and 13.46 respectively.

Vivian Chukuemeka, a staff of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps won the gold medal in the Shot put women final with a throw of 17.8 metres while Kelechi Onwuchukwu and Ebele Chidume threw a distance of 16.57m and 13:48m respectively.

In the 110 metres men's Hurdles, Selim Nurudeen won the gold, Samuel Okin, silver while Derima Afiesimana won the bronze.

Other events concluded yesterday include the 400m Hurdle women with Amaka Ogugbulam and Abimbola Lawal running a time of 56:46 and 59.01 seconds while Folake Balogun Daniel won the bronze with a time of 59.21.

The 19th edition of the NNPC/ExxonMobil track and field championship was organised to select athletes that will represent Nigeria in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and all the qualified athletes are expected to depart the country for a training tour abroad next week.
