Nigeria: EU-PRIME Launches N1.4 Billion Work Plan, Distributes N425 Million to Focal States

Abuja — European Union Commission To Reinforce Immunisation Efficiency (EU-PRIME), has developed a work plan project valued at N1.4 billion to be executed between March 2008 and June 2009 in 23 focal states.

This, the Commission said, is part of the ongoing support to the government of Nigeria to improve immunisation strategies aimed at eradicating polio and other preventable diseases.

A statement from the EU-PRIME made available to LEADERSHIP in Abuja, noted that it has given the initial fund allocation to the 23 states through the project field offices for the implementation of the work plan.

The beneficiaries are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Cross River , Ebonyi, Edo, FCT, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Yobe, Ogun, Osun, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto and Zamfara states. The total funds disbursed is N425 million (Abia, Cross River, Kebbi, Gombe, Osun and Plateau received N25 million each, while the other 17 states received N16 million each).

The initial installment of N425 million will enable the EU-PRIME project offices in the 23 focal states to renovate dilapidated health facilities and support the training of health workers to ensure the quality and effective delivery of immunisation services in the 23 states.

Since inception in 2002, the EU-PRIME project has procured immunisation equipment including motor vehicles, motorcycles, cold rooms, solar refrigerators, power generators, vertical hanging thermometers, needles and syringes, safety boxes and tally sheets worth over N2.1 billion. The equipment has been deployed to strengthen and ensure quality immunisation service delivery in the 23 focal states. In addition, the EU-PRIME project had also built the capacity of over 47,000 health workers.

The EU-PRIME is an eight and half year project (September 2001 - June 2009). The goal is to reduce the burden of vaccine preventable diseases including polio in Nigeria, also the purpose of the project is to ensure that safe and efficient vaccination services are permanently available in selected communities in the 23 states.
