The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must institutionalize internal democracy and imbibe the principle of rule of law as a prelude to reforming the nation's electoral process, President Umaru Musa Yar'adu has said.
He gave the challenge yesterday while declaring open a two-day retreat for National Working Committee (NWC) members of the party holding at the TINAPA Resort, Calabar, Cross River State.
The President, represented by the Minister of Information and Communication, Mr. John Odey said that all members irrespective of their positions must take the party's Irreducible Minimum Objectives (IMO) and other initiatives seriously.
"The Party's irreducible Minimum Objectives (IMO) and the fundamental issue of enhancing internal democracy, rule of law and capacity building are well thought-out initiatives which must be taken seriously in the present political dispensation by all members irrespective of position," Yar'adua said.
He said that, "We as the ruling Party must emphasize the imperative of internal democracy and the reform process of electioneering in this country."
He expressed optimism that the Party organs will develop the capacity to sensitize, educate and promote ideals of good democratic tenets that is the vision we all hold for the party.
"The NWC no doubt, remains a veritable and crucial organ of our Party, which is charged with the day-to-day running of the Party. We must therefore not relent in cross-fertilizing ideas needed to effectively re-position the party for challenges ahead.
