The FCT Minister, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, made this known during the FCT Operational Departments' briefing yesterday at the Banquet Hall of the FCT Minister's House, Life-Camp, Abuja.

The Minister disclosed that the Administration served 75 abatement notices for various environmental nuisances such as non-provision of waste bins, indiscriminate dumping of refuse and construction wastes at Jabi, Utako, Maitama, Wuse and Gwarinpa districts.

Dr. Umar remarked that the FCT Administration during this period, embarked on special intervention activities which included waste evacuation and garden waste collection in Wuse II and Garki II respectively.

He stated that the FCT Administration during this same period, treated 27 cases of sewer blockages and completed sewer maintenance work in Utako, Asokoro, Maitama, Wuse I, Gwarinpa I (Life camp), Jabi and Garki I districts.

The Minister further revealed that an average of 35,000m3 of waste water was treated per day at the Wupa treatment plant.

Dr. Umar expressed the commitment of his administration to maintain high level of environment in the Federal Capital Territory; adding that a healthy environmental cleanliness contributes positively to the good health and wellbeing of the people who live in it.

The FCT Administration has arrested and prosecuted 107 hawkers in the city between June 17 and June 30, 2008.

The Minister said that the arrest and prosecution of hawkers will continue until they are ready to comply with laid down rules; saying that there are rules and regulations in Abuja which must be respected and obeyed.
