Cameroon/Burundi: Rwanda 2009 - Lions in Camp for Match Against Burundi

Fred Vubem

4 July 2008

Some 25 players of the junior national football team have been called to camp in Yaounde ahead of the return leg match against Burundi next July 12. It is within the framework of the first round qualifiers for the 16th African Youth Championship to take place next year in Rwanda. There are only three foreign-based players in the squad that includes three goal keepers, seven defenders, ten mid-fielders and five attackers.

In the away leg played in Yaounde a fortnight ago, the Boys of Alain Wabo alias Fabio Capello, narrowly edged Burundi 1-0. It is worthy to note that Cameroon had a poor performance in the last edition of the competition which took place in Congo in 2007 as the lions were eliminated in the first round. The new coach, Alain Wabo therefore has the uphill task of erasing the sad memories of Congo 2007. Judging from their play style in the away leg match against Burundi, the junior lions have got to go back to the drawing board, that is, if they are nursing any hopes to lift the trophy.

It is worthy to note that the winners after both legs qualify for the final round of the championship to be held in Rwanda from January 18 to February 1, 2009. Twenty-eight teams will battle each other for a place in the second round, which will see seven teams joining host Rwanda for the finals. The last edition was hosted and won by Congo.
