Ilorin — All the Local Government Chairmen in Kwara State have been charged to make judicious use of monthly allocations in their respective councils in order for them to enhance the infrastructural development of their local government areas, and bequeath a lasting legacy to the people of the areas.
Governor Bukola Saraki made the admonition at a-three hour meeting with the Iocal Government chairmen, Liaison Officers (LOs) and Youth Coordinators at Ilorin, the state capital. Gov Bukola further stressed that infrastructural development of the local councils was a joint responsibility between the state and the councils.
Addressing reporters at the end of the meeting, the state's chairman of Association of Local Government Employees of Nigeria (ALGON), Toyin Sanusi, disclosed that youth employment had been a sour grape the councils had to contend with over the years.
He disclosed that new vocational centres would be established in all the councils and the existing ones re-activated for the training of the youths. Training of the unemployed youths would be carried out with the assistance of the technical schools in the councils.
He disclosed plans by the state government to upgrade all the comprehensive hospitals to cottage ones and each of the hospitals would have a resident doctor and an ambulance just as the doctors would be mandatorilly quartered in the hospitals.
"The basic health centres that would be established would be headed by staff nurses or community health workers. Besides, all pregnant women and children below the age of five would be treated free. Health as well as agriculture is being revolutionised in the state. The aim is to promote primary health institution in the state," he said.
Decrying the lackadaisical attitude of Kwara people towards the collection of permanent voters registers, he said, that the state government would officially flag-off the exercise.
He reiterated the stand of the Government that each local government area should have a dam to serve the various communities as the existing ones will also be maintained. The proposed irrigation project in local governments is to ensure that rice is cultivated twice annually as opposed to once.
"On rural electrification, the state government has given all the local councils two weeks to study the proposal and report back.
