Sierra Leone: £45,000 Clock for Eastern Tower

Approximately Le 261m (£45,000) has been used for the purchase of a clock for the eastern tower in Freetown, says Acting Mayor of Freetown city council Wednesday.

Herbert George-Williams, who is contesting to be Mayor of Freetown under the ticket of the All Peoples Congress (APC), made the disclosure at a debate organized by the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and National Democratic Institute (NDI) for Freetown city council mayoral candidates.

He said arrangements have been finalized to ensure the clock which will be singing the national anthem every hour becomes operational soon. "By the 10th of July, this clock will be on," he said.

George-Williams said he will construct or refurbish some markets including those on Krootown Road and Guard Street to make them bigger and ensure that people pay their taxes.

Other mayorship candidates gave an insight into their plans for the people if elected into office.

Reverend Abraham B. Sesay contesting under the banner of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) said, amongst other things, that he will be collecting garbage in small bags which would be used as manure for growing foodstuffs.

"I will see to it that markets are constructed and the citizens act be implemented with the registration of street traders," he said adding that he will see that revenue raised in the city benefit the citizens.

To start with, Rosaline Kargbo of the Peoples Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) said the country's economy is in turmoil. "I will endeavor to make the hospitals very hygienic and prevent the high infant and maternal mortality rates in the country," she said.

Independent candidate Pateh Bah said he will not walk around the city to collect tax, but will sensitize the public on upholding their civic responsibility. He said he has the initiative to attract foreign donors to come and help the council.

Another independent candidate Jonathan A. Peters, said he stands for transparency and accountability. He however added that he will construct houses, markets and create employment opportunities for youths.
