'Temnes Have a Stake in Slpp'
Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) aspirant in the forthcoming local council elections in Constituency 110, ward 387 yesterday dissuaded the notion that SLPP is a Mende party saying that Temnes played a major role in its formation.
"Temnes have a very serious stake in the SLPP. It is not a Mende party as alleged by our detractors," Abdul Ishmael Bangura told a jam-packed meeting at Gbangbayilla community which is made up of mainly Temnes.
He said SLPP is the real party for the Temne man. "SLPP was created by our Temne grandfathers. Traditionally, SLPP is our party and fortunately, the party has continued to manifest itself as a unity party. In fact, the last SLPP was largely led by northerners. Therefore, do not allow yourselves to be manipulated on tribal line. My party is a 'Kombra' party," he said.
Bangura noted that late Thaimu Bangura was not a fool to have pitched tent with SLPP in the 1996 run-off elections.
"He knew that the best political party for the Temne man is SLPP. It is broad-based, contemporary and impartial. I am proud of being a member of SLPP because it is a party of virtuous people that has propelled a lot of development in the country." If elected on Saturday, Bangura promised to project the felt needs of his people to the council. "My party has always been seeking the interest of the people hence it is referred to as the 'welfare' party. I admonish you all to believe in the democracy that SLPP pioneered," he said adding that he is against regionalism and tribalism which is the thumb card of APC.

Bangura told his people that SLPP wants to unite the country in order to accelerate progress so they should vote him and his party. "Vote me for development. The youths should be happy and hopeful as I am determined to promote their interest. I know it, feel it and sleep with it. Give me your support to push our case of marginalization."
