The Human Rights Reporters Network (HRRN), a non-governmental media organization, will on Saturday join other local and international observers to monitor the local council elections.

HRRN's president Al-Hassan Sesay told Concord Times that members from print and electronic media will be observing the election process in the Western area and some parts of the provinces.

He said members would be assigned to various constituencies to observe and report on events surrounding the elections in an objective and professional manner.

"Our involvement in the elections is purely a voluntary initiative and self sponsored with little support from journalists for human rights (JHR)," he said.

He said the network has already secured accreditation for its members from the national electoral commission (NEC) in order to have unhindered access to polling centres.

Sesay said the idea of forming the organization was borne out of series of human rights report trainings held by JHR. "Our primary aim is to report and monitor human rights issues across the country."
