The Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS)will host the 4th General assembly of the New Partnership for African Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (NEPARC)at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA)in Accra on July 25 - 27 this year.
This is a result of the confidence the NEPARC has reposed in the Ghana Red Cross Society of late and the congenial environment in the country. The GRCS is 50 years old this year
NEPARC is a consortium of African national societies of the Red Cross formed to provide leadership and promote the standards of best practice among members societies and individual members. TheGeneral Assembly is expected to attract about 50 national societies from Africa, Europe and North America.
Announcing this in Accra, Dr Stephen Adei, president of the GRCS, hinted that there is probability that the Red Cross Federation's regional headquarters would be relocated from Lagos, Nigeria, to Accra.
Dr Adei was speaking at the "homecoming forum" of GRCS organised by the Greater Accra Regional branch.The GRCS is 50 years old this year and the forum forms part of the activities to kick-start the anniversary celebrations.
Herevealed that the GRCS is currently serving on three advisory bodies at the Red Cross Federation Secretariat in Geneva. "I can assure you that inspite of the numerous challenges that we are currently facing, financial, logistical, staffing, etc., we are making steady progress," he added.
Dr Adei, who also doubles as the Rector of GIMPA, said the GRCS constructed 375 two-unit bedroom permanent houses for victims of the Northern floods last year. He said the society has conducted a field assessment andhas earmarked 1,000 households to be supported with food items which would be distributed in July 10 -15 this year.
