Ghana: For the Second Time No Winner at Suhum Primary

Isaac Akwetey Suhum

4 July 2008

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary contest of the Suhum constituency, which has been characterized by tension, confusion and demonstrations, took another dramatic turn last Wednesday, when delegates stormed the election grounds with worship and praise songs.

It all started when one of the delegates started going round the canopy under which the other delegates were sitting with prayers, chanting and singing of worship and praise songs. It is believed that the venue for the elections has been under spiritual attack and therefore calls for Gods intervention. But the worship and praises did not have any impact on the tension surrounding the elections.

On the elections itself, the delegates were given another chance to choose a parliamentary candidate to represent the area on NPP's ticket, but they once again failed to elect a winner.

It was a battle between Hon. Frederick Opare Ansah, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), who is also the Deputy Minister for Communication and Mr. Bryan Yaw Acheampong, his main challenger. At the end of the election, the two candidates scored 51 votes apiece, out of the total votes of 102 cast, and accordingly the event had to be postponed again.

This is the forth-conservative time that the primary has been postponed. The first election which was to be held at Adedaso, which is 10 miles away from Suhum, about two months ago was postponed as a result of confusion and misunderstanding which took centre stage of the programme.

An unprecedented demonstration, confusion and fight also characterized the second event which took place at Koforidua, and therefore necessitating the second postponement. The third round, which became the talk-of-the-town, as a result of the two unsuccessful programmes was peaceful due to a heavy police presence.
