As part of their shared responsibility, to call for lasting peace in Bawku, journalists/reporters, from both print and electronic media, radio presenters and programmers of all the five radio stations in the Region, have organized a football gala in Bolgatanga.
The programme, first of its kind in the region, was the first phase of media efforts to support government, in ensuring that the security personnel at Bawku, did not lack anything, they would need to operate efficiently.
Coinciding with Ghana's 48th Republic Day Celebration, last Tuesday, the gala was dubbed "Peace and Unity Gala".
In participation were the Ghana Police Service, Immigration Service, National Fire Service, Referees' Association of Ghana (RAG), and the Media 11, organizers of the event.
Media 11 was in group 'A' with RAG and Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), but the latter did not turn up. Media 11 lost their match against RAG, at the group stage, but qualified for the semi-final, alongside RAG.
This was because the two teams had been awarded three points, two goals each on technical grounds, as a result of the failure of the GPRTU to honour the competition.
Media 11 again lost 1-2 to the police and crashed out of the competition. The police then proceeded to the final, after beating immigration, and fire service.
Unfortunately for the police, they lost 0-2 to RAG, during the final match, though they put up a splendid performance.
Speaking after the final match, the Interim Chairman of Media 11, Karim Naatogmah, of Rock FM in Bolgatanga, and Citi FM, Upper East Regional reporter, thanked the participating teams and the public, for their impressive turnout.
He said though the initial aim of the programme, was to raise support for security personnel at Bawku, their efforts to solicit support from the public, was not encouraging.
Mr. Karim explained that the event had been divided into first and second phases, with the first phase taking place last Tuesday.
According to him, Media 11 would continue their campaign to raise support, whether in cash or in kind, so that they could present it to the security personnel at Bawku, in the near future.
It would also continue to seek peaceful resolution to the Bawku crisis, which has claimed several lives, displaced hundreds of people, and destroyed properties, running into thousands of Ghana cedis.
Mr. Karim said the event was also aimed at complementing government's efforts in providing food, shelter and other logistics to the security personnel.
The interim chairman hinted that the second phase may be a walk by a Tamale-based peace walker, from Zebilla to Bawku.
The peace walker would be supported by school children from Zebilla and its environs.
Other executive members of Media 11 were William N. Jalulah, Interim Secretary and Regional Reporter of The Chronicle, and Osman Abadoh of Style FM, Interim Organizer.
Presenting the trophy to the Referees' Association of Ghana, winners of the gala, the Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP/Mr. Ofosu-Mensah Gyeabour, commended the media for such a laudable programme.
He observed that the media and all the security agencies were partners, in maintaining peace and order, educating the public, and enforcing law.
The media and the security agencies should therefore, collaborate effectively in the carrying out their duties, for the betterment of Ghana.
