Member of Parliament for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo- Abrem (KEEA) Constituency, and Convention People's Party's (CPP) Presidential candidate for the December 7 general elections, Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom, has set a high standard for the three parliamentary aspirants who are gunning for his seat in the constituency.
The three contestants are National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Dr. Joseph Samuel Annan, an Economist, New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Nana Ato Arthur, who is also Central Regional Minister and the CPP candidate, Samuel Eshun, a Teacher.
Speaking at the Bakatue Festival in Elmina, on Tuesday, Dr.Nduom told the three aspirants who were present at the ceremony that the constituents at KEEA were looking for a member of parliament, who is vocal and could articulate the needs and interest of the people at the floor of the Legislative House. He also stressed that the constituency has attained some level of standard which must not be compromised.
"I'm not contesting the seat again. I'm now contesting for the Presidential slot with Professor Mills and Nana Akufo-Addo, therefore anybody who wants to replace me in parliament should learn how to speak well and for the constituents, because I have brought the seat into prominence, and we need some one who can maintain that status," he said.
According to the CPP Presidential candidate, KEEA does not want an MP who cannot express himself and therefore urged the people to vote for someone who can represent them very well, like he has done for them.
Turning to the fishing trawlers that are making life unbearable for the fishermen in Elmina and elsewhere, Dr Nduom promised to mount a campaign against the perpetrators of the act, until they stop their nefarious activities.
The Central Regional Minister, Nana Ato Arthur, on his part commended the Omanhen of Edina Traditional Area, Nana Kodwo Conduah VI, for the distinguished leadership he has exhibited since his enstoolment some 10 years ago.
He said the NPP has reduced the price of premix from GH¢ 3.8 to GH¢ 3.4 and urged the fishermen to take advantage of the situation to increase their catch.
The Municipal Chief Executive of KEEA, Mr George Frank Asmah, appealed to the people to stop throwing rubbish into the Benya Lagoon, adding that government spent US$40 million dollars to dredge the lagoon.
The Deputy Executive Director of Tourism, in charge of operations, Mr Edwin Owusu Mensah, revealed that 253,557 tourists visited the Central Region in 2007, in which GH ¢554,470 was generated for the country.
He said the region's Canoe Regatta is once again gaining national status and urged the fishing communities to take advantage to boost the local tourism.
This year's fish catch at the Bakatue Festival, was extraordinary since 40 years, as the net cast three times fetched more fish, signifying a good fishing year.
The ceremony attracted thousands of indigenes of the area and visitors.
