Kenya: Boxing - Chule And Njue Clash for National Crown

5 July 2008

Nairobi — Morris Chule will be out to floor Musa Njue when the two fight it out for the national super-featherweight boxing title at Eastleigh's St Theresa's Hall on Saturday.

The ten-round fight is promoted by Thomas Mutua of Afribox Camp International and sanctioned by Kenya Professional Boxing Commission.

Chule (9-6-2) recently lost to Russian Sherzod Nazarov at the Yubileiny Sports Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

"I believe I lost to a better boxer since Nazarov was very tough and experienced. But I think I have come of age and this is a stepping stone to my career as I will have a better bargaining power should I win the title. My wait for this title has been longer than expected," Chule said.

Njue, (5- 13- 3), has been preparing at 'Pal Pal' gymnasium in Pumwani and has promised to silence his opponent.

"I have never fought him but I have a clue of how to approach things. He is a hard-hitter and it will all depend on how he comes," said Njue.

Although considered a journeyman, Njue is a 'veteran of war' with his antics to absorb punches under pressure. He turned professional in 1990.

Chule, ranked 361 out of 1038 in the global ratings, has been working out in Komarock under the watchful eye of veteran Kenneth 'Valdez' Ochieng' and feels a golden opportunity is in sight.

"I have really waited for a chance to challenge for a Kenya title but nothing has been forthcoming," said Chule, who comes from the Kayole amateur production line and has learnt the ropes the hard way.

Chule made his debut in the bare-chested game in 2001 when he beat Peter Nderitu on majority points decision. But the Kayole prodigy rose from obscurity when he made early scares to David Kiilu before losing on split points in 2003.

Also on the card is a Kenya welterweight eliminator between Mombasa based Bob Obala and Kevin Onyango of Nairobi.

The card - Vacant national super-featherweight title. Maurice Chule vs Musa Njue - 10rds; Welterweight: Kevin Onyango vs Bob Obala- 6rds. Featherweight: Consolata Awuor vs Judy Waguthii - 4rds.
