Kenya's Harambee Stars played to a barren draw with Malawi Flames Sunday in an international friendly at the Mzuzu Stadium in central Malawi. The match, which part of Malawi's Independence Day celebrations, was important to both teams, who are battling to qualify to the second round of the 2010 World Cup/Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
According to the Stars logistics officer, Peter Serry, Kenya played well despite the poor conditions of the stadium, which is 260 kilometres from Malawi capital Blantyre, and poor officiating.
"The players were on top form. We dictated the entire game but we were unable to master the poor conditions of the pitch, which I can only describe as shambolic," said Serry.
Coach Francis Kimanzi put to test the entire team he had picked for the friendly, save for reserve goalkeeper Jackton Odhiambo.
Training
"We are very impressed with the way our boys played the match considering we had only one day of training before the game. They controlled the midfield and defended well," said Serry.
Kimanzi had picked a team widely made up of players in the Kenya Premier League, save for the middle East-based Edgar Ochieng, Kevin Ochieng and Osborne Monday. European based players were exempted from the friendly.
The Harambee Stars, who are joint leaders in group 2 of the 2010 qualifiers, used the match to test the players some of who have not been utilised in the qualifiers.
The team returns today aboard a Kenya Airways flight which is expected to touch down at JKIA at 4pm. In the team are Noah Ayuko, Jackton Odhiambo, Antony Kimani, Edgar Ochieng, Joseph Shikokoti, Lloyd Wahome, John Njoroge, Jockins Atudo, Austin Makacha, Osborne Monday, Andrew Oyombe, Levy Muaka, Kevin Ochieng, Francis Chinjili, Francis Ouma, Joseph Njuguna, Augustine Etemesi, Antony Dafaa
