Abuja — Academic activities continued to be paralysed yesterday at the Kaduna Polytechnic, following the nationwide warning strike by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) on Monday.

At the Tudun Wada main campus of the polytechnic, hundreds of students were seen discussing and expressing regret over the lingering industrial feud between the federal government and the union without a headway. LEADERSHIP WEEKEND could not speak to any official of the local chapter, but saw a posted notice signed by the national president and the secretary of the union, Mohammad Ali Kabir and S. I. Okonkwo.

The notice, titled, 'Notice of a One Week Warning Strike ' reads thus, "Following an emergency National Executive Council meeting of our union which was held on the 24th June, 2008 at Jimroose International Hotel, Abuja, it was resolved that the frustrating and humiliating manner in which the FG/ASUP renegotiation is deliberately being stalled is to provoke the union and to continuously resolve that all chapters should proceed on a one-week warning strike, beginning from 30th June, 2008 which will be followed by a total indefinite strike action on a date to be announced later."

At Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, ASUP vice chairman, Mallam Abdu Salisu Balarabe confirmed their absolute compliance to LEADERSHIP WEEKEND, saying, "Since the government is defiant to our pressing needs, we are indeed left with no option than to go. But it's unfortunate how our education system is being politicised, and government lacks deep commitment to boost the sector for good.
