Africa: Obama African Support Group Set for Launch in African Countries

George Agba

5 July 2008

Abuja — Obama African Support Group [OASG], an outfit dedicated to the actualisation of the Barrack Obama presidency in the United States, is set for launch, in all major cities of the African continent. This is coming on the heels of the group's application to the United States government to monitor the November elections.

In a press statement issued in Abuja by its coordinator, Elvis Agukwe – the group stated that Obama represents change not only in Africa but across the world and particularly in America.

According to Agukwe, "The support group is putting finishing touches to launch our own campaign which will cover a cross section of African countries by the end of the month of July.

"We have also applied to the United States government to be part of the independent election monitors for the polls. We would be sending observers in November as we won't want anybody under any guise to attempt to truncate the new face of peace.

"We have applied to be accredited as independent observers, especially for the states of Florida and Ohio" he added.

Agukwe maintained that "never in the history of elections in the world has a presidential candidate nominee received commendations and attention like Obama. He represents change not only in America but across the world, particularly in America.

"A lot has gone wrong and it is only through effective change that we can put things right. United States must never think that the world would be unconcerned watching them to choose their leader. And since whoever emerges as the president of America will play major leadership roles in world affairs, the world must show concern in who emerges as the American president", he stated.

Agukwe urged all democrats to unite, bury their sentiments of the primary elections and rally round Obama for the November presidential elections.

Said he, "We hereby call on all Americans of goodwill to seize the opportunity of a collective history and vote Obama as the next president of America. We also call on all religious leaders in Africa to pray for Obama's victory in the November elections.

"America is already enjoying boost in her image with the nomination of Obama and this will increase if he wins the presidential elections," he added.
