Nigeria: Nyako Returns, to Tumultuous Welcome

Adamawa — Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State yesterday, returned to Yola, the Adamawa state capital, to a tumultous welcome by the party supporters and a cross section of traders and "achaba" riders with a long motorcade across the state capital.

Nyako had been away to Abuja for two days to hold reconciliatory meetings with the members of the State House of Assembly who recently served him an impeachment notice. Speaking to a mammoth crowd at the Mahamud Ribadu Square, Gov. Nyako thanked the people of the state for the sense of solidarity they have exhibited to him and his administration and promised to continue the good work he has started of improving the living standard of the people.

He said in line with his campaign promises; that he would continue to do justice to all and sundry irrespective of tribe, religion or political affiliation provided that they are indigenes of the state.

The governor denied charges of treasury looting levelled against him, saying, "I had never looted or stolen from Government coffers in all the Government positions I held before and I will never do it now."

According to him, "The journey to the desired destination has just started and I am ever ready to trample on any corruptive tendencies by people who are saddled with the responsibility of governance in my administration and I thank the presidency for intervening in the impasse that degenerated into signing a notice of impeachment on me by members of the state legislatures."

Also addressing the crowd, the senator representing Adamawa central, prof. Jibril Aminu, boasted that the light has brightened again on the horizon of the state, which proved that the governor is unblemished, pointing out that there are some unscrupulous and patriotic citizens of the state that don't want to see the state move forward "but they will be put to shame" he stressed.

He recounted the various hurdles he scaled through since the saga, which will never deter him from pursuing the noble cause he was sworn in to uphold by delivering the dividends of democracy to the electorate that gave him the mandate.

Senator Jibril Aminu, emphasized that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his cronies will never come back to Adamawa for any mandate and urged the electorate to do  away with them at any elections in the future.

Nyako's return is however overshadowed over the years by his willingness to remove the chief of Staff as well as the secretary to the state's government may trigger another round of executive-legislative tension.
