Following the outbreak of about twenty cases of polio across Kaduna State, the state governor, Arc. Mohammed Namadi Sambo, yesterday at the Kaduna International Trade Fair Complex, launched a special campaign against the menace which the governor said was gradually ravaging the state. In attendance in the said meeting were all religious and traditional leaders as well as other stakeholders.
According to Governor Sambo, "Why we called for this special meeting is because the menace is ravaging our state, and in line with our eleven-point agenda of providing free medical treatment to children under the age of five and pregnant women, we cannot sit down and see the potentials in our children being undermined by polio.
"We must ensure that our succeeding generations are full of good health so as not to have a generation full of severe impairment, which will hamper development in all ramifications of our life. If we all agree to work towards ameliorating this menace, we will overcome it and move ahead, insha Allah."
Governor Sambo, who was emotional about it further challenged stakeholders, saying, "We have to do something concrete - from religious leaders to local government chairmen and ensure that by the end of this year, we eradicate polio completely. And on our own part, we will give optimum support".
He also stressed that the state spent N60 million each month in combating malaria, which is fifty per cent of reported cases in hospitals and clinics across the state.
In his speech, the Emir of Zaria, Alhaji Shehu Idris, assured the state government of their commitment and readiness to combat the menace, saying, "Another war is here; our entire adherents should work hard and wipe it away, for God answers prayers."

The special retreat was climaxed with a power-point presentation by Alhaji Mustapha Jumare, chairman of the State Action Committee on Polio (SACI) who narrated the dilemma being faced by the state, noting that it called for rapid attention.
