Extensive preparations are underway to celebrate the 3rd Eritrean National Youth Festival and the 30th anniversary of the founding of the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students (NUEYS) in Sawa from 18 to 21 July, 2008 under the theme "Youth: Guarantor of All-round Freedom".

The end of colonialism or slavery, or the absence of war is not the only meaning of freedom, for its significance is much greater than that. Civilization and development of human beings can be termed as freedom. Moreover, while overcoming ignorance, illiteracy and backwardness can be considered as social freedom, economic freedom constitutes in rising above poverty, hunger and dependence. The theme "Youth: Guarantor of All-round Freedom" thus underscores the crucial role of the youth in national security as well as social development and progress.

As we all know, a nation does not belong to only one generation, but rather belongs to all past and future generations. And it is the duty of every generation to contribute their due role in the development and security of their nation. All generations have one common goal and aspiration; and that is to secure a comfortable and stable living. The history of the brave and committed youths during the stage of our struggle against foreign colonialism is one of the proudest moments in Eritrean history. The present stage of securing all-round freedom and emancipation will be the responsibility of the current generation.

As is well known, the most important resource of any given country is its people. Human beings are the source and creators of all other resources and hence are our world's most important endowments. The fact that some countries with limited natural resources were able to achieve development while others with abundant endowments continue to wallow in poverty and misery only proves the afore-mentioned truth. Thus at a time when we are striving to secure an all-round freedom, it is imperative to highlight the critical role of people in general and of the youths in particular. Since no one will work on our behalf it is up to us to build our nation and secure a bright future. And the youths are the part of the community that has the ability and energy to turn this aspiration into reality. Hence the priority task in the nation building process should be to inculcate the youth with the values of hard work, perseverance, creativity, discipline, integrity, strong aspiration for progress, and love of work and education. The primary objective of the 3rd Eritrean National Youth Festival is then to communicate this message to the people in general and the youths in particular. Glory to the Eritrean youths who are the guarantors of all-round freedom and the pride of their people and country!
