Nigeria: Why I Resigned As Chief - Goje's District Head

7 July 2008

Gombe — The former district head of Kashere in Gombe State, Alhaji Mu'azu Hassan yesterday gave reasons why he had to resign his office 30 years after appointment.

According to him, he resigned because as a traditional ruler, he could not continue to swallow the highhanddedness and political intolerance of the state governor, Alhaji Danjuma Goje, who has extended his harrassment to tradtional institutions and their elderly occupants.

The 75 year monarch, who has been the chief of the govenor's hometown said, he could not understand why a state governor would take politics so bitter so as to engage his entire family in a ceaseles hostility and enmity.

In his letter of resignation dated July 2, 2008, Mu'azu had cited old age and deterioriating health conditions, but one of his sons, and former youths leader of the PDP in the state, Alhaji Abubakar Muazu said," my father is only being diplomatic about the whole saga. I have his authority to speak for him and will do so."

The whole thing borders about me. Becuase we have parted ways with the governor. He has taken our issue so petty and personal that my entire family is now an enemy of the state. Remember Goje's loyalists assualted me and my brother Hamza. He even sponsored one of my brothers Bapayo against me. He is a social friend to Goje for the past 3 years. My other brother, Adamu Muazu was also detroned by Goje on June 11, as vilage head of Kashere, while Ishaku Muazu, the managing director of Jewel Suites, who has leased and paid the Hotel for five years was also removed, and the contract terminated midway. So you can see how far the govenor has gone after us. But I believe God will vindicate us.

According to Mu'azu, his father had to resign to avoid being hypertensive, wondering why the governor, whose two wives are their relations, could be so mean to them.

He, however said, "what we know is that whoever is to be appointed as replacement will equally come from the royal family which we belong."
