Governor Ibrahim Idris of Kogi State has disclosed that his administration had so far spent over N5 billion in the education sector since it came to power in 2003.

He made this known at Anyigba in Dekina Local Government Area of the state, during the commissioning of the law faculty twin lecture theatre at the state university.

He noted that the decision by his government to commit such huge resources in the sector was due to their desire to sustain the state as educationally advanced in the country, adding that no stone would be left unturned in pursuing such laudable goal.

Governor Idris further commended Prof. Francis Idachaba, the Vice Chancellor of the institution for transforming it within a short period in office, describing the accreditation of the 29 courses at the university by the National Universities Commission as a wonderful feat.

While expressing the commitment of his administration to assist the institution to attain greater heights, the governor expressed delight that the state university is presently one of the best higher institutions in the country.

He therefore, advised the students of the university to be committed to their studies, and shun acts capable of turning them to liability after leaving the school.

On the killing of a student of the institution, Mohammed Maiyanga in October last year by the convoy of Enugu State governor, Alhaji Idris described as embarrassing, the silence of that state government on the matter, noting that all efforts to make Governor Sullivan Chime see reason had proved abortive.

The governor announced a donation of N4 million to the two families whose children lost their lives on that fateful day.

He equally called on the affected families to recommend one person each to be trained on the scholarship of the state government, stressing that the gesture was aimed at easing the pain they were passing through since the "bloody incident" of last October.

In a remark at the occasion, Idachaba described as eventful, the transformation that had taken place at the institution since he assumed the mantle of leadership.

He said that through the collaborative efforts of the state government, he had been able to change the university which was hitherto referred to as a glorified secondary school, to a centre of academic excellence.

While disclosing that the institution, based on its achievements in the last few years, had been given approval by the NUC to admit 2,500 students for this year's academic calendar, he enjoined the state government to sustain the tempo of making the school the best higher institution in the country.
