Abuja — Residents of the Federal Capital Territory have drawn the attention of the FCT Minister, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, to the poor construction work on bus stop parking lots and demarcation pavements along the major roads in the territory.

Speaking recently to our correspondent at the Airport road, the residents noted that the decision to construct the parking lots at strategic bus stops on FCT roads was a welcome development as they believed they would, to some extent, reduce the regular occurence of accidents on the roads. They, however, regretted that due to the shaby work done by the contractors, the idea had done more harm than good.

Some of the residents lamented the poor supervision of contracts in Nigeria, attributing the poor construction of parking lots and demarcation of pavements to the increase in ancident rates in the territory.

"There had been several accidents on this Airport road and the construction of parking lots was supposed to ease the situation, but rather than arresting the situation, it now contributes to it becasue the job was not well done. I don't see the reason why the government should award a contract without supervising it to ensure its success considering this job done on this airport road, you wonder whether or not constractors have conscience at all . The pavements were built at separate points and were not alligned for smooth and easy parking of cars. Drivers avoid parking on the lots for fear that their cars could be damaged and so park carelessly on the major road.

This has been responsible for the several accidents on this road," lamented a resident who gave his name simply as Engr Paul.
