Sierra Leone: UN Acclaims Salone Elections

Acting Executive Representative of the Secretary General in Sierra Leone commended the people of Sierra Leone for the successful conduct of the local council elections.

Michael Schulenburg said he was pleased to observe that the elections were generally conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner.

"With only a few exceptions, polling centres opened at the designated time and Sierra Leoneans were able to exercise their franchise," Schulenburg said.

He lauded the Sierra Leone Police, the National Electoral Commission and the Political Parties Registration Commission for their tireless efforts in ensuring that the electoral process was conducted properly.

Schulenburg said Sierra Leone set very high standards in the international community with the exemplary conduct of the 2007 elections.

He called on Sierra Leoneans to ensure that subsequent electoral processes including the counting, collation and certification of the election results are finalized without rancor.
