Chris Mbunwe

7 July 2008

A giant motor battery industry will soon go operational in Mbelewa -Nkwen Bamenda estimated to cost FCFA 47 billion.

Speaking at a press briefing in Bamenda on Friday, June 4, the Chair of the Board of Directors of Penn Pan Pacific Hotel and group of Companies, Professor George Penn Muluh, disclosed that administrative and other procedures are near completion and in two months the motor battery plant will take-off.

He disclosed that he is working with partners from Algeria, South Korea and Uganda.

The motor battery plant will be assembled in Bamenda and it will carry the name Penn Pan Pacific Motor Battery Industry Bamenda. "All components will be shipped from South Korean, reputed for very high quality motor batter productions," Muluh said.

Concerning health hazards from toxic waste emitted from such an industry that deals with acid, Muluh said the industry site is far off from the population and maximum care will be taken to ensure that the streams around are not polluted.

With the current cost of a 70 ample motor battery at FCFA 58,000 in Cameroon, Professor Muluh said, the Bamenda type of motor battery will be of same high standard, but the price will be 10 percent less because the partners are aware of high cost of living and level of poverty in Cameroon.

Profess Muluh said his business partners who have been in the business for 50 years were in Cameroon recently and they agreed that the project should start in two months.

Answering to a question why he could not establish the industry in Douala where there are other industries, Muluh, said his dream is to transform Bamenda into a touristic haven.

"Since our standards are going to be comparable only with those of South Korea, we are very optimistic that the Penn Pan Pacific Motor Battery Industry will be a centre of attraction."

According to Muluh, the project is estimated to employ 800 youths. The Chairman of Penn Pan Pacific announced as a sideline the launching of Miss Penn Pan Pacific beauty contest that will take place on July 26, at 2008 Malpensa Night Club Penn Pan Pacific Hotel.

Interested candidates who should be girls between 18-28 years are expected to register beginning July 7, at the hotel. Winners shall carry home a cash price of FCFA 200,000, 100,000 and 50,000, for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. The first winner will be sponsored by Management of Penn Pan Pacific Hotel to contest for the Miss tourism 2009.
