Following last Saturday's local council elections, chairperson of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) has called for a robust civic education for the public to know what local government means.

Speaking at the British Council auditorium, Dr. Christiana Thorpe told journalists yesterday that results from the different districts across the country had started arriving at the NEC tally centre in Wellington, Freetown.

She disclosed that the tally process started on July 6 by 3:30 pm with the briefing of party agents and observers. "Representatives from political parties were present. All Peoples Congress (APC) sent six representatives, Peoples Movement for Democratic Change (PMDC) had one, Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) sent seven and appreciable representatives from independent candidates," she said.

Dr. Thorpe said results from remote areas in Koinadugu, Bonthe, Kambia and Tonkolili to be flown in by helicopter starting July 10.

Commenting on reports of President Ernest Bai Koroma's movement to polling stations on the election's day, Dr. Thorpe said despite the fact that president and his wife have the right to freedom of movement in the country, she was not expecting them to go to polling stations.

She thanked members of the public for taking part in a peaceful and successful conduct of the polls which ended peacefully with few reports of incidents across the country.

"The deadline for the receipt of complaints is 5:00pm on Tuesday 8th July. Any complaints received after the deadline will not be addressed," she said.
