Novelist Shimmer Chinodya has added another feather to his cap by winning the Noma Award for Publishing in Africa in 2007 for his novel Strife.

The book was published in 2006 by Weaver Press, Zimbabwe. Chinodya received the award, which included a U.S.$10 000 cash prize in Namibia recently.

Guest of honour at the event, Namibian speaker of the National Assembly Theo-Ben Gurirab praised Chinodya for his literary genius. "We should remember that the author, Shimmer Chinodya is writing in a country that is facing serious challenges but also opportunities at the time of change and reconciliation. Yet he shows that the creative spirit is not bowed by difficult circumstances," he said.

Chinodya has published eight novels, children's books, educational texts, radio and film scripts, and has contributed to numerous anthologies. He has won many awards, including the Commonwealth Writers' Prize (Africa region). He seeks primarily to present an African worldview, but wants his literature to speak to the world as a whole.

He describes his works as "experiments on the effects of time and change on humans, and human relationships tangled in the eternal quest for happiness and fulfillment".
